Every year, buildings across the UAE experience power failures – whether from a fire, a tripped breaker, or a utility fault. In those first few seconds of sudden darkness, people freeze. They panic. And that’s exactly when an emergency exit lights system saves lives.
Dubai Civil Defence mandates that all commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, warehouses, malls, and residential towers must have fully functional emergency exit lighting systems installed and regularly maintained. The UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice is clear: proper emergency lighting is not optional. Operating without an approved system puts lives at risk and exposes building owners to serious legal consequences.
A well-designed emergency exit lighting system does more than just glow green. It illuminates escape routes clearly, activates automatically the moment power is cut, maintains at least 3 hours of backup battery operation, and integrates seamlessly with your fire alarm system so every component works together in a real emergency.
At Abdullah Fire Safety, we’ve installed emergency exit lighting systems across hundreds of commercial and residential properties in Dubai. Our team handles everything – from system design and product supply through to Dubai Civil Defence approval, installation, commissioning, and annual maintenance. One call. One company. Complete peace of mind.
From basic LED exit signs to fully integrated centralized systems – we supply, install, and maintain every component your building needs to stay compliant and genuinely safe.

An emergency exit lights system is a network of battery-backed luminaires and illuminated exit signs that activate automatically the moment your building’s mains power supply fails. The system detects the power loss instantly and switches to battery operation within 0.5 seconds, maintaining illumination along all escape routes for a minimum of 3 hours – giving every occupant enough time to evacuate safely.
Yes. Dubai Civil Defence and the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice mandate emergency exit lighting in all commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, warehouses, schools, shopping malls, and residential towers. The system must be installed by a DCD-approved contractor, tested monthly, and inspected annually. Operating without a compliant system risks failed building permits, fines, and occupant safety.
Maintained emergency lights operate continuously – they stay on during normal building operation AND during a power failure. Non-maintained lights only activate when mains power is cut. Maintained systems are typically required in areas that remain occupied at all times (cinemas, theatres, hotels) where sudden activation could cause confusion. Non-maintained systems are common in offices, warehouses, and spaces that aren’t permanently occupied.
Dubai Civil Defence requires a minimum battery backup duration of 3 hours for all emergency exit lighting systems. This means that when mains power is cut, every luminaire and exit sign in your building must continue operating at full brightness for at least 3 hours. Annual testing must verify this duration as the battery ages – batteries failing the 3-hour test must be replaced immediately.
A centralized emergency lighting system uses one central battery bank to power all emergency luminaires and exit signs throughout a building, rather than individual batteries inside each fitting. Centralized systems are recommended for larger buildings (hotels, hospitals, multi-floor towers) because they’re easier to monitor, test, and maintain. They also provide real-time fault reporting and integrate with BMS systems for automated compliance management.
Dubai Civil Defence requires monthly functional testing – a short simulated power failure to confirm all luminaires and exit signs activate correctly. Additionally, an annual full-duration 3-hour test is mandatory to verify battery performance over the full required backup period. All test results must be recorded in a log and made available for DCD inspection. Abdullah Fire Safety’s AMC covers both requirements automatically.
Installation costs depend on building size, number of floors, system type, and whether a centralized or self-contained approach is used. A small retail unit may start from AED 2,000-5,000, while a full commercial tower installation can range from AED 30,000 to over AED 200,000. We provide free detailed quotations after a site survey, so you know exactly what’s needed before committing to anything.
Absolutely. LED upgrades are one of our most common projects. We assess your existing system, identify any non-compliant or underperforming fittings, and replace them with modern LED emergency luminaires and exit signs that consume up to 80% less energy, last significantly longer, and provide much better illuminance levels. We handle all DCD documentation for upgrades – and most projects complete in a single visit.
Our installation and maintenance teams cover all of Dubai and the wider UAE. Wherever your building is located, Abdullah Fire Safety will come to you
