The system detects the power loss instantly and switches to battery operation within 0.5 seconds, maintaining illumination along all escape routes for a minimum of 3 hours – giving every occupant enough time to evacuate safely.

Dubai Civil Defence and the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice mandate emergency exit lighting in all commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, warehouses, schools, shopping malls, and residential towers. The system must be installed by a DCD-approved contractor, tested monthly, and inspected annually. Operating without a compliant system risks failed building permits, fines, and occupant safety.
Maintained emergency lights operate continuously – they stay on during normal building operation AND during a power failure. Non-maintained lights only activate when mains power is cut. Maintained systems are typically required in areas that remain occupied at all times (cinemas, theatres, hotels) where sudden activation could cause confusion. Non-maintained systems are common in offices, warehouses, and spaces that aren’t permanently occupied.
Dubai Civil Defence requires a minimum battery backup duration of 3 hours for all emergency exit lighting systems. This means that when mains power is cut, every luminaire and exit sign in your building must continue operating at full brightness for at least 3 hours. Annual testing must verify this duration as the battery ages – batteries failing the 3-hour test must be replaced immediately.
A centralized emergency lighting system uses one central battery bank to power all emergency luminaires and exit signs throughout a building, rather than individual batteries inside each fitting. Centralized systems are recommended for larger buildings (hotels, hospitals, multi-floor towers) because they’re easier to monitor, test, and maintain. They also provide real-time fault reporting and integrate with BMS systems for automated compliance management.
Dubai Civil Defence requires monthly functional testing – a short simulated power failure to confirm all luminaires and exit signs activate correctly. Additionally, an annual full-duration 3-hour test is mandatory to verify battery performance over the full required backup period. All test results must be recorded in a log and made available for DCD inspection. Abdullah Fire Safety’s AMC covers both requirements automatically.
